UK Direct was never intended as a 'Global' airline, and was setup to offer a Quality VA service flying from the UK. I believe if you start to become too big, you lose out in the end and become 'diluted'. Pilots who wish to fly in other areas of the world have a huge selection of other VA's to choose from, who can offer a far better local service than we can.

If UK Direct was allowed to expand it's pilot roster to beyond 100 pilots, it would involve a more complex and bigger system to handle things such as flight assignments and the quantity of email would be massive. This figure of 100 pilots may increase in future, I'm not saying that this will always be the MAX, but for now it is.

How does it affect you?
If you`re a new pilot who wishes to join us, then providing the the message 'Full House' is not displayed, we can accept you (when you pass the exam). You need to become an active pilot to keep your place. Pilots who are given a roster place and then submit no reports in the next month or two will be deemed to have decided against flying with us. These roster places will be reallocated first.

For pilots who have submitted only a few reports in the first few months, it means the 4 and 6 month rule will be applied. If I do not hear from you within 4 months, you will be removed from the roster. You will still be a pilot up to the 6 months point, after which you will be removed for good.

All pilots are then asked to submit at least one pirep within 4 months of the previous one. After 4 months, your roster place is marked with a #. After 6 months, it will be marked ##. When it becomes ### and your roster place is highlighted in red, you will need to report a flight or contact the Roster Department as soon as possible, or your roster place, ID number and history page will be recycled for new pilots.

The longer you have been with us, and the more hours or flights you have on record, the longer I am prepared to stretch the rule.

If you are busy, and believe you will not able to fly for some months, then please be polite let the Roster Department know. You can take leave in order to deal with real-world business, and still remain a part of the UK Direct Roster. If we don`t hear from you at all then expect to be removed. Any pilot who is removed due to lack of contact for six months will not be allowed back in for 2 years; pilots who take "voluntary redundancy" will be allowed back after another 6 months.

If you take leave, you should contact the Roster Department within 6 months to keep your roster place active. Even if you cannot submit pireps for 12 months, a simple mail twice a year is not asking too much.
