WELCOME TO THE NEWSROOM
This Update 01/10/01.
A Sad Day for Mankind

Tributes left outside the American embassy in London. picture from Newsweek.
A few personal words from the editor
With the graphic images of the recent events still very fresh in our minds and the air of uncertainty that is prevailing around the world I would like to use the moment that you view the simple picture above as a simple act of remembrance and reflection. Regardless of nationality, race, colour or creed why does man commit such awful acts against fellow man. A sad day in the history of the world.
I hope all our sincerest thoughts are for the people left to rebuild their lives.
Editorial
This subdued news page is written by a person who is extremely saddened by the events in America. It was brought to my attention by some concerned members that the picture of the 747 over flying New York, in last months news, might be withdrawn as a mark of respect, as the twin towers of the WTC are clearly visible. Well I thought long and hard over this issue and contemplated uploading a simple message of condolence and support to people affected by this tragedy. But the words did not come and the message was being sent in every journal, newscast and web page the world over. I did not feel that I had to make any statements on behalf of us all. With the anonymity that a global means of communication such as the internet provides there might well be people amongst us who do not share in sympathy so instead I offer a personal message and invite anyone to join me.

James is having problems
Online manager James has fallen victim to that common ailment finger pressimus in the shiticus. This common problem occurs when the pc user has a rush of blood to the head and decides on the wrong choice when a window appears with a warning. Having suffered with this ailment myself I found that adjusting the horizontal hold on the monitor was all that was needed and I promptly threw it out of the first floor window. He appologises for any inconvenience as he struggles to get back online and up to speed.
Get well soon James.
Screenshots
Thanks to the pilots who have submitted some screenshots for inclusion on the news pages. However please only send them in a reasonable size, ie no larger than 600 x400 pixels and in .jpg or .gif files only. I recently had a problem at my mail server with a picture attachment that blocked all of my other email simply because it was 1.4Mb in size and kept timing out on the download.
To the members who asked after my Caribbean screenshots the
scenery of Sint Maarten was :

Real World Captains Checkride? !
An Air Transat Airbus A330 landed at Larjes in the Azores
without power on August 24th after the pilot declared an in-flight emergency for
diminished fuel levels and engine problems.
The aircraft, carrying 291 passengers and crew, had apparently encountered fuel
problems and glided for some 40 plus miles and approached the runway at high
speed. After a heavy landing which burst the tyres and caused some damage to the
under carriage everyone on board was evacuated safely using escape chutes.
